Cameron Making 3D Amazon Tribe Doc

James Cameron Amazon Tribe

If you’ve seen Avatar – and judging by the box office figures the vast majority of you reading this will have – then you’ll know that the basic plot centers on an indigenous people being bullied into submission by people who have their own plans for the land they inhabit.

In Avatar the indigenous people just happen to be aliens living on a different planet, but similar things have been done by humans to humans throughout history. And they are still happening today.

James Cameron is keen to highlight the plight of one set of indigenous people facing a struggle against what they’d describe as an oppressor. And it looks like it could form the basis for his next project.

The Xikrin-Kayapo tribe are fighting against the building of a dam which they fear will flood their lands. According to AFP, Cameron recently stated:

“I want to return to meet some of the leaders of the Xikrin-Kayapo tribe who invited me. I want to take a 3D camera to film how they live, their culture.”

I sense a serious documentary in the making here. Although I do question the necessity of a 3D camera. I know Cameron is in love with 3D and considers it the future of film-making but for a documentary? Wouldn’t that be overkill and actually risk muddying the message somewhat?

Ah, what do I know?
