Cameron Diaz signs On For “Annie”

Cameron Diaz will be mean to orphans.

Remember when Sandra Bullock was in talks to play Miss Hannigan, the mean orphanage manager in Annie?¬† Well, never mind–she passed on the role.

Instead, Deadline reports that Cameron Diaz has signed on for the role. Quvenzhane Wallis plays the title role of the plucky orphan Annie in this updating of the Broadway musical based on the Depression era comic strip. Jamie Foxx plays the key role of the millionaire who rescues Annie. Jay-Z and Will Smith are producing, with Will Gluck directing.

Diaz has played bad before, notably in “Bad Teacher.” As for singing, well, “Annie” is not a challenging score, and the role of Miss Hannigan in particular requires little vocal talent. Plus they can fix anything in the studio. It’s a movie, not theater.

Diaz is currently filming “The Other Woman” with Leslie Mann and Kate Upton.

“Annie” is set for a Christmas 2014 release.
