I’m a very casual comic book fan. Basically, I know of the big characters and the comics they appear in, and that’s about it. But I adore comic book movies, with the X-Men, Spider-Man and current Batman series’ all up there in my favorite films of all time list.
What this means, however, is that I know little or nothing about the less well-known or contemporary comic book characters, one of which is Hellboy. It doesn’t mean I enjoyed the films any less but it does mean that unless the history of the character and the environment he resides in is explained in the movies, I am lost.
We’ve so far had two Hellboy movies, both directed by Guillermo Del Toro. But with him tied up in New Zealand working on The Hobbit for the next few years, the chances of a third Hellboy film in the near future are remote. However, del Toro has told MTV that he gives his blessing for another director to take the hot seat for the B.P.R.D. spin-off movie.
The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense is the organization that Hellboy works for, alongside ordinary humans and other supernatural or especially gifted individuals. A B.P.R.D. movie could follow the plot of the comics where Hellboy leaves the bureau and we get to see other characters such as Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman take the lead.
I think this is a great idea because it’ll fill the gap left by del Toro’s work schedules preventing a Hellboy 3 and also help fill in the world around the character for those of us not addicted to comic books. And then in four years time when The Hobbit is in the bag, Hellboy 3 could become a reality.
