In Bigger, Stronger, Faster*, Barry Bonds will undoubtedly tell how little he knows about PEDs.
The Hollywood Reporter has news that buzzed-about-at-Sundance doc Bigger, Stronger, Faster* has been acquired by Magnolia Pictures.
Timely doc BSF* is about the use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Director Christopher Bell includes his brothers’ experiences using PEDs.
If you think this is your typical Stay Away From Drugs, Kids, doc, you would be wrong. I heard an interview with Bell during Sundance, and if I remember correctly, while I wouldn’t go so far as to say he is pro-PEDs, I would say he’s not anti-PEDs. Basically, his point was that the evils that are supposedly caused by use of PEDs haven’t been proven, that is the side effects such as cancer, heart disease, depression etc., etc. Part of the problem with this, though, is that there haven’t been a lot of long-term studies of the use of these drugs, because they are illegal (it also should be noted that some of the positive effects from some PEDs, such as HGH, have also not been proven).
The doc also supposedly features interviews with athletes such as Ben Johnson, Carl Lewis, Floyd Landis, and Barry Bonds. I’m curious about what the last two have to say: “Well, of course I haven’t actually used any PEDs, but if I did I guess it would have made me win the Tour de France.” “I haven’t used PEDs, but if I had, I’m sure they wouldn’t have made my head grow really big…” Interesting.
Magnolia Pictures is the home entertainment wing of Wagner/Cuban Cos., with the Cuban being Mark Cuban, the billionaire innovative, forward thinking owner of the Dallas Mavericks (of the NBA…you know, the sport without a PED problem) and TV network HDNet. The doc will be shown there after its theatrical run.
