‘Beverly Hills Cop 4’ Details

Has Hollywood run out of ideas? Seriously. It seems as though every other film released these days is either a remake or the sequel to a long retired franchise. One of those series being brought back to life for modern audiences is Beverly Hills Cop, which once starred the now much-maligned Eddie Murphy, and could do so again.

We’ve known for some time that Beverly Hills Cop 4 is on the way but until now, little was known about the lot or storyline. Latino Review now has full details of the first script draft, written by Wanted scribes Michael Brandt and Derek Haas. It turns out that the film, tentatively called Beverly Hills Cop 2009 will be old school.

The story starts with Axel Foley’s former partner Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) jumping from the 20th story of the Los Angeles Police HQ. Foley then returns to Beverly Hills to discover the truth behind the supposed suicide. There’s a new partner, a limo driver to provide the comic relief and a story involving corrupt LAPD cops.

It sounds OK but hardly mind blowing. I can’t help thinking that movies have moved beyond the basic concept behind the Beverly Hills Cop series, and Eddie Murphy in particular. Why not make a new cop movie which does all of the same things but doesn’t borrow from a series of films with its roots set firmly in the 1980s?

Brett Ratner is slated to direct the film but Eddie Murphy hasn’t yet signed up. Beverly Hills Cop 4, or whatever it ends up being called, is currently set for a 2010 release. Personally, this doesn’t really float my boat. Move on, and leave Murphy back where he belongs.
