Ben Kingsley in Talks for “Iron Man 3″ Bad Guy

Ben Kingsley may do evil things with nanobots.

“The Avengers” is still a few weeks ago from opening, but that doesn’t mean that the giant wheel of Marvel has stopped turning. No, preparations for the next string of Avenger solo movies keep rolling. For example, today we have news of “Iron Man 3,” specifically the ever important question of who will be the movie’s bad guy.Variety reports that Ben Kingsley is in talks to play the villain.

Many people had wanted to see The Mandarin as Iron Man’s next nemesis, but no luck here. Instead, Kingsley would play a character who is “involved in the spread of a virus through nanobots.” The movie, written by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and directed by Black, is reportedly loosely based on the “Extremis” storyline from a 2005 series of comics written by Warren Ellis. I looked at the handy Wikipedia list of Iron Man villains and came up with Mallen as a likely candidate, though Iron Man experts would be better able to make a guess than me. They could also be creating someone entirely new.

Kingsley last appeared in “Hugo” and is currently filming “Ender’s Game.”

“Iron Man 3″ is set to begin filming soon, with Robert Downey Jr. returning as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and, it seems, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts. It is set to be released on May 3, 2013.
