Beckinsale So Over Underworld

Kate Beckinsale, not anxious to get back into the Underworld black leather. Or vinyl. Or whatever.

ComingSoon did an interview with Kate Beckinsale about her upcoming film Nothing But the Truth and while they didn’t post the whole interview yet, they put out the word from Ms. Beckinsale that she is unlikely to revisit her role as Selene in any future Underworld movies.

Beckinsale, who is not in the upcoming prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, said she believes there may be more sequels in store for the franchise but then had this to say about her own participation.

“I feel like I’ve played that character enough times that I don’t think I’d be excited to play the same character again. It’s a weird experience. I’ve never done that before, you’re playing the same character in two movies, and after two, I feel like I’m kind of done with that.”

Whatever. More fascinating is the reaction to this post on ComingSoon. People are generally irate (who knew there was this much feeling about the Underworld movies?) with an attitude of “you would be nothing without these movies, who are you to think you don’t have to be part of them anymore?” Some seem to be unaware that Beckinsale has had a more than healthy career outside of Underworld. I don’t particularly care for her work, but she’s certainly done well enough and has enough respect from directors that she can walk away from Underworld without that decision affecting her future much. And as for fans of the series, calm down, everyone, she was important to the movies, but it’s not like we’re talking about replacing Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man, or Harrison Ford in Star Wars or something like that. We’re not dealing with a classic icon. Anyway, the Underworld movies were more about the world that was created than stars, so they’ll figure something out if the story continues.
