Beach Bummer: McConaughey NOT Playing Magnum PI

Seriously, Matthew McConaughey isn’t even in the conversation with oh so ’80s Tom Selleck. McConaughey wishes he were half as cool. 

I know, you’ve lain awake at night wondering what’s going on with casting a Magnum PI movie. Perhaps you’ve even heard rumors that Matthew McConaughey has been cast in the title role. Perhaps that news has struck you dumb and you don’t know what to do. Dimwitted, surfer guy McConaughey as urbane, sophisticated (yet casual) Thomas Magnum is practically unimaginable. Unless you have a scary imagination.

But never fear! According to the MTV Movie Blog, Brian Grazer, producer of the potential film (and seriously, why are they making this movie? Must every middling TV show creak and groan its way to the big screen?) says McConaughey has NOT been cast as the Hawaii-bound detective. Grazer says:

“I think the idea for ‘Magnum P.I.’ is to find a counterpoint, to not try and find the new Tom Selleck but to find someone that is just so different that you go, oh my God! That guy is Magnum?!?….It’s so much about casting. You have to find the actor that adds through his own personality something to the title.”

Personally, I think Matthew McConaughey is someone that is so different that you would go, “Oh my God! That guy is Magnum?!” But not in a particularly positive way. So I’m glad he’s (apparently) not in the running.

So who should it be? Who is that “what?!!” person? In honor of all those “what the heck” casting moments, I give you…Thomas Magnum, played by Dominic Monaghan!! Hey, why not?
