Battlestar Galactica is a franchise that has had many incarnations, some successful, some not so. The latest, in the form of the Sci-fi channel’s television series, is a mixture of the two. Adored by its fans, viewer numbers have varied greatly, leading to a seemingly constant threat of cancellation.
Season four is the last season, with a month to go before the final episodes air. So where next for the franchise? Why, a movie of course. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal is in negotiations with the show’s creator, Glen A. Larson, to write and produce a big-screen version.
However, those fans of the television series hoping for a continuation of the storyline on the big-screen are going to be disappointed. The new movie will be a completely new property, with no connections to either the old or new series. The only things to be carried over will be a few key characters such as Adama, Starbuck, and Baltar.
I admit to never having seen even one episode of either TV series, so my views on this are a little limited. Will the series translate to the big-screen well? Will the scope and storyline be big enough to maintain audience’s interest for the duration of a movie? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
