‘Avatar’ Tops $1 Billion At Box Office

Avatar

Avatar may have cost an absolute fortune to make, and taken years to do so. But the budget and development time now seem to have been justified, with the movie doing spectacular business in its first three weeks of release.

Kirsten will likely cover the full weekend box office on Monday, but Avatar on its own managed to take an impressive $68.3 million domestically, making it the biggest gross ever for a film on its third weekend. The previous record was $45 million by Spider-Man in 2002.

Add that to the pot and we have a total domestic box office of $352.1 million so far. Overseas, Avatar has brought in a stunning $670.2, which combined together means the film has now sailed past the $1 billion mark.

Avatar is now 15th in box office takings of all time and challenging the last big-hitter, The Dark Knight. There is now speculation that Avatar could go on to even top Titanic, the number one box office smash of all time. And another film from the master of mainstream movie monsters, James Cameron.
