“Avatar 2″ Is Four Years Away

Do you like waiting? Then you’ll love “Avatar 2″!

“Avatar” rocked the movie world in 2009, breaking box office records and spawning a raft of inferior 3D movies. As always, when a movie earns that much money, a sequel is a must, and director James Cameron happily obliged, promising not one, but two sequels–in 2014 and 2015.

Scratch that off your calendars. Jon Landau, an “Avatar” producer, told BleedingCool that “Avatar 2″ (as we’ll call it for now) is actually four years away from hitting theaters. That means you might want to make those “save the date” cards for 2016 and 2017.

Landau was speaking at an event showing footage from the 3D “Titanic,” by the way. That one’s only a few months away.

That’s a really long time between the first film and the appearance of the second. Basically, if you were a child who stared at the blue beings of Pandora in 3D wonder, you will be a snarky teen when the sequel is released. That’s not how movie studio execs like to plan things…

However, when the person taking his time is James Cameron, the bosses at Fox will grit their teeth and wait, knowing that the man has had a lot more hits–megahits–than flops. It may take a while, but chances are he’ll deliver the blockbuster goods.

Meanwhile, Cameron has said he plans to write a “prequel” novel to keep everyone on track and oh, yes, Disney is opening an Avatar theme park in a few years. Maybe it will open the same time as the second movie! Wow, that would be an amazing coincidence…or is it?
