Art House Box Office: “Zero,” “Amour” Hold On

"Zero Dark Thirty" continues to impress.

It was a good weekend at the indie box office as well as at the multiplex. “Zero Dark Thirty” had a fantastic opening last week and “Amour” also did well in its opening weekend. They really impressed in their second weekends, though, with great holds during a tough holiday weekend when so much attention was fixed on the big holiday weekend. “Zero Dark Thirty” averaged $65K in five theaters after opening last week with $82K, and “Amour” averaged $20K from three screens after opening with $23K.

Other holdovers were strong as well. “The Impossible” averaged $9,250 at 15 theaters when it opened last week, but jumped to a $12,300 per screen average this weekend. “Silver Linings Playbook” averaged $4,908 at 371 theaters last weekend, but added 374 theaters and ended up with a $5,517 per screen average. That $600 extra doesn’t seem like much, but it’s always good when a movie shows an increase well into its run, and it also makes sense when the jump in theaters is that big.

“Promised Land” opened in 25 theaters and averaged $7,606, a number which Focus Features conceded was modest. That’s expanding to 1,500 theaters next week, and they seem to be hoping that word of mouth will help. Good luck. The new doc “West of Memphis” averaged $2,771 at five theaters. I think that’s worse than modest.
