Art House Box Office: The Many Perks of Being a Wallflower

By Kirsten Anderson Box Office

Overdog, not underdog.

It’s another weekend where the specialty box office looked hale and hearty in comparison to the wan multiplex box office.

“The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” Stephen Chbosky’s adaptation of his own novel, had a great debut, with an average of $61,000 at four locations for a total of $244,000. Not surprisingly, the audience was heavily female and young–70% female and 60% under age 25. What does that mean? If you’re a winsome, sweetly troubled boy, there are plenty–and I mean PLENTY of girls out there–anxious to make the hurt go away. One caveat–they don’t look like Emma Watson. And if you’re man enough to deal with that, you’ll be fine.

Fashion documentaries always seem to do well and “Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel” is no exception. The doc earned $64,238 from three theaters for an average of $21,413. Another documentary, “How to Survive a Plague,” didn’t make quite as big a splash, with a $7,000 average from four theaters.

How about last week’s big winner, “The Master?” It expanded to 788 theaters for $5 million with a $6,345 per screen hold, a respectable number for that big an expansion. I also suspect that this is a movie that does well during the week. “Arbitrage,” another success from last week also expanded, to 244 theaters; it earned $1,283,900 for an average of $5,262 per location.

Here’s the rundown of the numbers:

How about next week? Not a lot that you’ll have heard of, other than the health care doc “The Waiting Room.” We have a foreign action movie, “Thaandavam,” “Bringing Up Bobby,” a comedy with Milla Jovovich and Bill Pullman, directed by Famke Janssen. Not much else. Looks like it will be a good week to catch up on things.

How about next week?
