Art House Box Office: “Spring Breakers” Parties to Big Opening

A little T&A at the art house this weekend.

It was a good weekend to be one of the three theaters showing “Spring Breakers,” the Harmony Korine attempt at mainstream filmmaking. The movie starring Disney princesses Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez and an interested James Franco performed like a big time studio teen sexploitation movie designed to grab the attention of bored kids struggling through theĀ  last few months of the school year. With a $270,000 and a $90.000 per screen average, “Spring Breakers” is easily the biggest specialty box office opener of 2013, and it’s going to take something pretty big to top that over the rest of the year (any other indies with teen girls in bikinis coming over the next few months?).

Nothing else came close to “Spring Breakers,” but other new movies had good openings. “From Up on Poppy Hill,” the animated film directed by Goro Miyazaki earned an average of $27,514 from two theaters. Sally Potter’s “Ginger and Rosa” averaged from three theaters. Here are the numbers, courtesy of Deadline:
