Art House Box Office: “Gimme the Loot” Gets the Loot; “The Sapphires” Also Off to Good Start

"Gimme the Loot" has a good weekend.

Not interested in animated cave families? Well, ditch the multiplex and head over to the art house, where several newcomers got off to a good start. “Gimme the Loot” had the best opening, with $23,400 at one theater. The 2012 SXSW pickup had a lot of positive media attention, and screenings that featured Q&As helped bring in audiences.

The 2012 Cannes film “The Sapphires” didn’t make quite the splash of “Loot,” but it still got off to a solid start, with a $10,232 per screen average at four theaters. “Starbuck” was a hit in its native Canada, but didn’t get much attention here, earning $5,482 at three theaters; an American version of the sperm donor comedy is in the works, with Vince Vaughn starring.

As mentioned in the regular box office breakdown, “Spring Breakers” expanded to over 1,000 theaters, and did well enough to land in that arena’s top ten. “On the Road,” last year’s Kerouac movie, opened in 42 theaters after playing a limited qualifying run in December.
