“Arrested” Movie Is In “Development”–Today, At Least

It’s on, it’s off, it’s on, it’s off…

I almost hesitate to write this.

But I suppose I should.

I’m talking about news in The Hollywood Reporter that a script for an “Arrested Development” movie is being written. By series creator Mitch Hurwitz and co-producer James Vallely. Reportedly the duo had been waiting until all the series stars confirmed that they would participate, but now are just going ahead and writing it.

That still doesn’t give us a date, any definites that it’s happening, or any solid commitments from cast members. That’s why I hesitated to write about this. Yet I know that there are devoted fans of the show who are desperate for any kind of news about the potential feature film version of the critically acclaimed but low-rated sitcom.

(and that’s another reason why I hesitate–there are so few devotees of the show; the coverage of the rumored movie has been way out of proportion to the number of people who are probably interested)

I was a big fan of “Arrested Development,” but don’t love the idea of a movie spun off from it. I think it will be hard to get all the cast together, and if you don’t do that, the whole thing suffers. Plus it was just such a TV show–I have a hard time puffing up interest in a two hour episode. I’d rather see Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, et al, in some great, original movies.

But all of this may add up to nothing. It still might not happen. Or it might. Whichever, we’ll try to keep track of the rumor mill.
