Darren Aronofsky, probably planning ways to have Wolverine beat up Superman.
If someone told me that the first runner up prize for something was getting to work with Hugh Jackman, I would weep tears of joy. Then I’d get really mad at myself for making my face into such a mess when I was going to see Hugh Jackman, ’cause I don’t cry pretty.
Now, I’m sure Darren Aronofsky is usually glad to hear about the prospect of working with Hugh, who jumped into “The Fountain” (figuratively, not literarlly), when Jackman stepped in after Brad Pitt dropped out of the lead role. Reportedly they have a good relationship. But if the grand prize Aronofsky lost out on was directing Warner Bros. next attempt at a ”Superman” movie, the prospect of Hugh singing and dancing “Put on a Happy Face” might not be enough.
See, as we know, Zack Snyder got the “Superman” job, which Aronofsky had also been in the running for (this post is one giant parade of dangling prepositions). So now, as Deadline and multiple other outlets report, Fox has offered Aronofsky the “Wolverine”sequel, which I believe is going to be filmed mostly in Japan (I think that’s definite, right?). Now, as a consolation prize, Warner Brothers offered Aronofsky “Tales from the Gangster Squad,” a 1940s LA set cops and robbers movie (which Ben Affleck passed on, according to Vulture), and are still trying to get him to take it, but it appears that he’s leaning towards “Wolverine 2.”
So why would Aronofsky, low-budget indie darling (though I think “The Fountain” was bigger…which is why its failure hurt more) director of such films as “Requiem for a Dream,” “The Wrestler,” and the upcoming “The Black Swan” want to take on not just a superhero action movie, but a sequel superhero action movie? Well, I guess he just has a desire to give that type of movie a try, sort of like a successful college coach who suddenly decides to take a job in the pros. And the next available big superhero movie just happens to be a sequel. And if Aronofsky does decide to take “Wolverine 2,” he no doubt is hoping that it will just destroy “Superman.”
