Cannes Casting! Deadline reports another deal from the South of France–Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of “The 33,” story of the 33 Chilean miners who were trapped underground for 69 days in 2010. Banderas will play Mario Sepulveda, who got the nickname Super Mario for his energetic response when emerging from the mine. Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro are also set to star. The project was developed in cooperation with the miners and their families. Patricia Riggen will direct, with filming set to begin in the fall.

Banderas was last seen on screen in “Ruby Sparks.” He will be seen later this year in “I’m So Excited,” directed by his longtime collaborator Pedro Almodovar. He’s also in Terrence Malick’s “Knight of Cups” (well, so far–Malick does not hesitate to leave star cast members on the cutting room floor, as they would say in the pre-digital days) and Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete Kills.”    .
