Anthony Mackie Joins “Pain and Gain”

Anthony Mackie will start going to the gym with Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson.

Paywalled Variety tells us that Anthony Mackie has been cast in “Pain and Gain,” the “low budget” crime drama Michael Bay is getting to make in exchange for agreeing to make “Transformers 4″ (Paramount gave Bay the money for “Pain and Gain” in exchange for his agreeing to the Transformers gig. Everyone has a price.).

“Pain and Gain” is based on a real life crime escapade that took place in Miami in the 1990s–a group of muscleheads from a local gym get involved in a kidnapping that goes wrong. Here’s a detailed breakdown of the case. Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson, Rob Corddry, and John Turturro are already set to star.

Mackie will play Noel Doorbal (whose role is featured in the above description of the case). The character is described as “”a big-hearted bodybuilder who works out with Wahlberg’s character, Daniel Lugo. Doorbal has little to show for his hard work, leading him to get involved with Lugo’s scheme.” Do they mean little to show from working out? Because Mackie is rather slight (although a handsome man); he doesn’t have a gym rat/steroid guy look. Unless he’s going to take this opportunity to beef up (without the steroids, we hope…sorry, baseball is on my mind!).

The charming Mackie, who Vulture reminds us once colorfully described Ryan Gosling as a “delightful petit four” and a “vanilla mocha fudge blossom,” will next be seen in “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” and “Gangster Squad.”
