Angels & Demons Casting: Ewan McGregor Heads to Vatican

Ewan McGregor

The versatile Ewan McGregor, papal aide, song and dance man.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ewan McGregor is in talks to join the cast of Angels & Demons, author Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code prequel.

Ron Howard will direct, as he did The Da Vinci Code. Tom Hanks is reprising his role as Robert Langdon, busy symbologist professor, who is all wrapped up in solving a murder and uncovering a plot by the Illuminati, a secret group, to blow up the Vatican during a papal conclave (the meeting after the pope’s death where a new pope is chosen), when he really should be grading papers or something. Ayelet Zurer (Munich, the original Israeli TV version of In Treatment) plays Langdon’s helper, who is trying to learn about her father’s murder.

McGregor would play the role of the late pope’s sidekick, Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca, “also known as Janus,” who initially helps Langdon’s investigation. If he seriously is ”known as Janus,” as in the two-faced Roman god, then I suppose  it wouldn’t be a stretch to guess that he turns out to be more demon than angel. And IF that name and that guess is true, well, then now you know why people snicker at Dan Brown’s writing.

McGregor has Deception, with Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams opening today and he’s currently filming I Love You Philip Morris. Whatever, I just wish he’d reprise on Broadway his star turn as Sky Masterson in the recent London production of Guys and Dolls. And let’s throw Hugh Jackman into that as Nathan Detroit. What a good looking show that would be. Sigh.
