Al Pacino to Become Despicable, Too

By Kirsten Anderson Casting

Al Pacino will be a vocal bad guy.

Al Pacino has played some memorable characters onscreen. You probably don’t need me to list them, but I guess I should just review with names like Michael Corleone, Tony Montana, Serpico, and of course himself in “Jack and Jill.” He’s a very physical actor who has become a rather, umm, distinctive presence. He’s just booked a role, though, that will require him to rely more on his voice than on waving his arms and giving wild eyes.

(Note: I’m not saying that Pacino overacts. Well, okay, I kind of am, but I just mean now, in this phase of his life, when people want him to show up and “do Pacino” more than play a character. In his younger years he was a much more subtle actor and reportedly still is onstage, which is his real love.)

Back to the actual story, which is Deadline’s news that Pacino has booked his first voice role in an animated feature: he’ll play the villain in “Despicable Me 2,” opposite Steve Carell’s good guy/bad guy Gru. No word on what exactly he’ll be doing other than presumably SHOUTING A LOT.

Pacino has been filming a Phil Spector biopic for HBO. He also has the long aborning John Gotti biopic on his roster, if that ever really happens, plus “Stand Up Guys” with Christopher Walken and possibly a film of “King Lear” in his future.
