Regular readers of Snarkerati will know how big a Trekker I am, and therefore will know that I can’t resist reporting any details I hear about the forthcoming J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek movie. The thing is, this story is a biggie as believe it or not the Klingons have been written out of the movie!
It was already known that the main focus of the plot involved the Federation against the Romulans, but most of us expected the Klingons to be in there somewhere or other, especially as relations between the two nations was probably at its worst at the time is set. And indeed the Klingons were involved, having their own storyline running alongside the main one. But no longer. Abrams explained to Digital Spy:
“There was a big Klingon subplot in this and we actually ended up having to pull it out because it confused the story in a way that I thought was very cool but unnecessary.
“So we have these beautiful designs that we’re going to have to wait and do elsewhere I guess.”
Elsewhere you say? What, like a sequel perhaps? God, I hope so as I don’t think I could stand it if Star Trek ended for good. I’m hoping that Abrams rebooting of the franchise will be enough to get a new TV series given the green light.
Abrams also spoke about the decision to use the Romulans as the main villains this time around, and it seems his reasoning behind it is purely because it’s unusual and unexpected. He explained:
“What was interesting to me was that it wasn’t the Klingons. That’s what you expect and it was fun to use the Romulans the way we did.”
“Part of the fact is that they hadn’t seen them for so many years, so that it immediately breaks, for anyone who knows, the rules of Trek to start the movie and have Romulans crossing paths with Starfleet. It jumps in breaking the rules, which I think is kind of fun.”
Star Trek XI is due to be released on May 8th, 2009, and I for one can’t wait.

Abrams is an idiot. Established canon has Romulans not having Contact with the Federation til many years later, during the TOS Episode Balance of Power.
If he thinks that flaunting established canon with-in the Trek universe is going to win him fans, he is sorely mistaken. I wonder what else he can do to try to kill off the franchise for good, which EVERY decision he has made concerning this film has done.
It is Wagon Train in Space, not 90120 in space.
Dumbass.
Um, don’t you mean “Balance of Terror”? Hello!
