Have I slipped into a coma and then awoken in a strange alternate universe where Hollywood has completely run out of ideas? I surely must have, as that’s the only legitimate way of explaining how Warner Bros. is preparing tot turn Space Invaders into a movie.
For those of you not aware of Space Invaders, it’s a truly classic video game which started life as an arcade game in the late-1970s before making the move to people’s homes via the new fangled games consoles of the day.
As for the gameplay, well, just look at the image above. It pretty much shows the whole of the game in that one still screenshot. You’re the green spaceship at the bottom and you have to shoot the invading aliens without getting zapped yourself. It’s hardly Call Of Duty, granted, but it was all we had back then.
However, I cannot for the life of me understand how Space Invaders could make for a good movie. But according to The L.A. Times, WB is currently trying to acquire the rights from Japanese company Taito. This comes hot on the heels of movies based on Asteroids and Missile Command being planned.
In essence, WB is merely after the name. The game has no storyline whatsoever and so it would be an open book as to which way the movie went. Although space and some kind of invaders would clearly have to play a part. Hang on a minute. Hasn’t this movie already been made? It was called Independence Day, if my memory serves me correctly.
