A Few Final Oscar Notes

Oh, come on, let her cry.

Just FYI:

  • THR’s Risky Business Blog says that in the green room, Kate Winslet was asked again why the British press has been on her case about crying when she’s received awards this year. She basically said she didn’t care, but I at least care. I find this such a strange issue. She’s winning the biggest awards in her profession, she’s come close and been disappointed before, and for god’s sake, if you’re looking for stoicism, try someone other than an actor.
  • The MTV Movies Blog says things that didn’t make it on TV were a reporter mistaking Kevin Kline’s wife Phoebe Cates for Salma Hayek; Vanessa Hudgens’s dress almost coming down; and Steven Spielberg and Ron Howard showing off their imitations of his laugh to a no doubt bemused Seth Rogen.
  • Variety says Oscar ratings were up significantly this year, but this is somewhat misleading as last year’s ratings were a record low. In other words, defeating the 2008 ratings was the equivalent of getting your batting average over the Mendoza Line. Nevertheless, why the improvement instead of a further descent? The movies nominated for the big awards weren’t any more popular than last year’s crop. All the buzz about this year’s ceremony being different was probably mostly heard by those who were going to watch anyway. Two of the better explanations are that the writer’s strike last year left everyone confused about the state of the industry–remember, some of the other awards shows didn’t even go off last year; and that what with everyone being poor and unemployed, there’s not much else to do but sit home and watch the Oscars. Take your pick.
