Art House Box Office: Audiences Like “To Rome with Love”

This is a terrible poster. What is Allen looking at?

Results from the non-Pixar division of the box office! Audiences turned out to see “To Rome with Love,” Woody Allen’s latest after he built up a reservoir of good will from his success with last year’s “Midnight in Paris.” The difference,  though, is that film became an art house smash based on good word of mouth from pleasantly surprised audience members (present company, who loathed the movie, excepted). Based on the reviews, though, it doesn’t seem like “Rome” is likely to get that kind of bounce from satisfied customers. I’m sure it will do well with the art house crowd and Allen stalwarts, but I wouldn’t count on it being a breakout hit. Sony Pictures Classics will take advantage of early good will by rolling it out wider and faster than “Paris.”

Out of the holdovers, both “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and “Moonrise Kingdom” continue to expand and do well. Focus Features had this to say about “Moonrise” and its success:

“Moonrise continues its box office momentum with big grosses in the new opening markets/theaters, and in many holdover houses where the Friday and Saturday numbers increased from last weekend (or experienced very modest drops). Many houses had sellouts on Friday and Saturday.”
