There have been numerous rumors surrounding the next Microsoft games hardware. Pretty much everyone agrees Microsoft will be the next to make its move after Nintendo, with Sony happy doing its own thing on its own timeline. But what else?
An interesting rumor to emerge a few days ago was that the Xbox 720, as most people have taken to calling it, will actually be named the Xbox 8 and tie into both Windows 8, the desktop/tablet operating system, and Windows Phone 8, the mobile operating system.
It makes a lot of sense to tie the three together. Apple has worked wonders (mainly for its bottom line) by building an ecosystem which sees all its products work fluidly with each other. And Microsoft could do a lot worse than copy that way of thinking.
However, the name is surely a fallacy. Windows Phone 8 will probably last a year at most, and Windows 8 proper two-to-three years. The next Xbox, on the other hand, would be expected to live for between five and 10 years. Why would Microsoft brand it Xbox 8 and risk making it seem outdated before its time?
