Xbox 720 Plans Leak – Coming 2013

A document has turned up online that looks to be an official Microsoft roadmap for the Xbox 720, its as-yet-unannounced successor to the current Xbox 360. It could be a fake, of course, but it runs to 56 pages and contains a wealth of information and images, suggesting authenticity.

The document refers to the new console as the Xbox 720 and indicates a launch planned for 2013. The presentation appears to date back to August 2010, so many of the plans may have changed. My money is still on a 2013 launch however, with or without this document.

The main points are:-

  • An incremental update to the hardware
  • Xbox 360 backwards-compatibility
  • Blu-ray and 3D supported
  • Kinect v2.0 included from the start
  • $299 starting price, with a 10-year lifecycle

In a wider context Microsoft is looking at the Xbox 720 as more of a living room hub for all content rather than just a mere games console, with movie-, television-, and music-streaming at the core of the hardware.

I believe this document (via The Verge) is real. If not then someone, somewhere has far too much time on their hands. What do you think – about the Xbox 720 plans and of the authenticity of the document itself?
