I defy anyone who watched the gameplay trailer for the new Tomb Raider title debuted at E3 2012 not to be somewhat excited by the return of Lara Croft. For a tired series this looks like being one worthy reboot.
The release of Tomb Raider, as it’s confusingly called, is still 9 months away, but it looks likely plans for sequels are already afoot. Speaking to VideoGamer, Crystal Dynamics’ global brand director Karl Stewart, said:
“I have to be careful because I know exactly where she’s going. You have to look at the future, you have to look at where… It’s not just one game.”
“At the end of this game we want her to be that strong female character that is willing to go and seek out mysteries and seek out tombs. She’s going to be going to plenty of tombs in this game, but we’re going to have somebody who wants to go on that adventure, who wants to be the person that she now is. That’s the goal.”
“I don’t want to say anymore on it because I’ll have the game director of the next game going ‘what the f*ck are you saying!?’”
This means that, at the very least, those behind the new game have had discussions over the story arc and character progression they’d like to see happen over several games. And it could mean the sequel is already at pre-production stage.
I was blown away by the gameplay trailer. And that’s someone who fell out of love with the series a long time ago. I don’t think I’ve been this excited about a future title for a long time.
