Sony Unveils New PS3, Both Smaller & Lighter

Sony has finally unveiled the new model of Playstation 3 that will be on sale in time for the 2012 holiday season. An updated model has been expected for a while, and there are no real surprises in the final details.

Three new models of PS3 have been revealed, but not all will be available in every territory. The new models are instantly recognizable as a PS3, but all are thinner, lighter, and have a redesigned internal structure.

The 500GB and 250GB models will be sold in North America and Japan, while the model with just 12GB of flash memory will only be available in Europe. All are being launched in September or October, with prices in the U.S. being $249 for the 250GB model and $299 for the 500GB model.

This new model, officially known as the CECH-4000 series, is likely to be the last released before Sony announces the PS4. Then the PS3 may be given an extreme makeover and sold in a similar way to how the PS2 is currently.
