We haven’t had a new Guitar Hero or Rock Band game for some time now, mainly because sales suggested the genre had peaked. But as a fan I’m in the mood to buy a new game again. It would appear I’m not alone.
According to The GamerPlex, an unknown Twitter user tweeted, “the plastic rock community needs a new game to look forward to.” To which the official Rock Band Twitter account replied, “Oh, it won’t be long now… news coming at PAX East in 3 weeks!”
That’s pretty definitive. There will be a new Rock Band game announced at PAX East, but will it be a true sequel in the form of Rock Band 4, or merely just another band-specific release like The Beatles or Green Day?
To be honest I would be happy with either. If the band is of the caliber of The Beatles or Green Day then that’s fine by me. If it’s a proper sequel then I wonder what new innovation Harmonix will include to persuade people to part with their cash?
In some ways the release of Rocksmith, which sees players use a real guitar instead of a fake plastic one, has changed the whole scene. It would be good to see Harmonix rise to the challenge, but I guess we’ll have to wait another three weeks before finding out.
