
Gaming has come on in leaps and bounds over the last 40 years, when Pong was about as immersive an experience as you could get. But while many gamers are happy with their current-gen consoles and sequels aplenty, the industry will continue to evolve.
Next on the agenda is the Wii U, followed by the PS4 and Xbox 720. But then what? Perhaps a recent patent application by Microsoft holds the key to answering that question.
The company has applied for a patent on a system which brings the visuals beyond the bounds of the television set and into the room beyond. As others have noted, the end result is a little like a basic version of the holodecks seen in Star Trek.
This is just a patent application at present, so don’t start saving up just yet. But with Kinect opening the door to this kind of technology, I wouldn’t bet against it becoming reality at some time in the future.
