Microsoft really wants to shift some extra consoles before this generation draws to a close. Not content with offering an Xbox 360 for just $99 up front (paid back as a monthly subscription for two years) the company is now giving them away for free.
There are a couple of catches, however. Firstly you have to buy a new Windows PC (worth more than $699 in the U.S., $599 in Canada), secondly you have to be a student. Oh, and only certain retailers are taking part in the deal.
Still, if you pass all the qualifying tests you can grab yourself a new 4GB Xbox 360 for free. Which can’t be bad. The idea is to give students a boost as they gear up for the new school year. Microsoft made the same offer in 2011.
Just one piece of advice for anyone looking to take advantage of this offer: wait until the Window 8 upgrade program begins (rumored starting date is June 2). If you buy a Windows 7 computer after it comes into effect you’ll be able to upgrade to Windows 8 later in the year for a fraction of the retail price.
