Game and Gamestation are two chain of game stores in the U.K. There are hundreds of these shops the length and breadth of the country, as well as a few in other countries, at least for the time being. Unfortunately their future is in the balance.
The Game Group has gone into administration, as had been expected for some time. Of the 610 Game stores, 277 are being closed with immediate effect. The remaining 333 stores will be kept open while a buyer is sought.
The problem Game had was undercutting from online retailers. It was hard to continue justifying purchasing games from Game when the same titles were available for cheaper on the Internet. Especially in these days when most of us are having to tighten our belts.
My first thoughts go out to the staff who now find themselves without a job. Over 2,000 are being made redundant this week, with more likely to be let go in the future. I just hope a buyer can be found and soon, or the U.K. could be losing another iconic high street name.
