There was a time when you couldn’t walk into a game store without knocking at least one World War II-based shooter off the shelves. They were everywhere. From Medal of Honor to Call of Duty and everything betwixt the two.
Then along came Modern Warfare, a game which dumped World War II in favor of a moder-day setting. The characters changed, the uniforms changed, the weapons changed, and the locations changed. What’s more, the very nature of the gameplay changed.
The question is whether there is a need to go back and revisit World War II again? OXM thinks there is, presenting a list of reasons why. And I happen to agree with many of them. There is something real and haunting about World War II games that you just don’t get with their modern day equivalents.
The problem is finding a way to explore that time without simply retreading old ground. All of the big campaigns from World War II have been explored in depth, none more so than the D-Day landings. If there is an original take waiting to be discovered then I’m all for it happening. If not then why bother.
