
Borderlands 2 has now been out for a week, and most people are happily either playing through the campaign or teaming up with others online. Apart from the odd poor review, the reception has been fantastic.
Sales have also been strong; Borderlands 2, for instance, enjoyed the biggest launch of any game so far in 2012 in the U.K. In other words it’s a hit, both critically and commercially.
At this juncture I think we can safely assume there will be a Borderlands 3. In fact, it’s already likely at the early planning stages. The lead writer on Borderlands 2 certainly seems confident of a sequel, as can be seen in this interview on ‘The Totally Rad Show’ (via The Game Effect). Borderlands has established itself as one of the big summer franchises, with a strong cast of characters, solid gameplay, and unique visuals all setting it apart from the other contenders.
Borderlands 3 is happening, believe it. I guess the only question is whether it will be released at the end of this generation, or at the start of the next generation, of hardware. My money is on the next-gen… and it will look spectacular.
