I am just one of many people who want a Final Fantasy VII remake. Perhaps I’m a little more passionate about the subject than most, wanting this game more than any other you care to mention, but I’d guesstimate there are millions of people who would buy FF7 if it were to be remade with current- or next-gen visuals.
It isn’t just us fans who want it either. Various Square Enix employees have come out and said they’d love it to happen too, though most dismiss the idea because of time, budget, and tech constraints. Not so Julien Merceron, the company’s Worldwide Technology Director.
He recently gave his thoughts on the subject to FFDream, which have been translated from French to English by PSX Extreme. Merceron said:
“It’s a game that is very precious (important in my heart) to me also, surely you will find on the internet some interviews that I have made in the past that confirmed that. For me, Final Fantasy VII, it was one of the most beautiful experiences. But there are other Final Fantasy [titles] released before that were also superb and then still others after.
Of course, for me, as a player I would. There are people in the company who decide what they do with the brands and what they do and choose with the Final Fantasy franchise, what is right and what isn’t good. I just try to decide on the level of technology and I [leave them to their decisions] but as a player as a fan, yes of course, I’d like a remake.”
Unfortunately Merceron isn’t the guy who decides these things, as he’s quick to point out to avoid a barrage of emails telling him to make it happen, no doubt. But still, having another person in the company suggesting a remake of Final Fantasy 7 wouldn’t be a bad idea has to be a positive thing, right?
